The Archipelago of Vis joins the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in April 2019

UNESCO's Global Geopark Network now has 147 sites in 41 countries.
Geoparks are territorial spaces presenting a geological heritage of international importance and they are managed according to a global concept of protection, education and sustainable development, for which they are real laboratories.

The archipelago of Vis is made up of some of the oldest rocks in the Adriatic Sea and extensive sand deposits have created remarkable caves and reliefs, the best known of which are the Blue Cave (Modra Spilja) and the monk seal Cave (Medvidina Spilja).
The discovery in the sea of flint quarries used in the manufacture of prehistoric tools testifies that these previously much larger islands were inhabited 8,000 years ago.
